Moorwerk

Based on socio-cultural research situated in the bogs of North Germany, moorwerk examines the historical relationships and material identities that emerged within this particular ecosystem.
The process of bog oak formation, which can take up to thousands of years also being used within dendrochronological sciences to trace environmental changes, becomes the central focus of this project.

A deep material exploration of bog oaks opened up a methodology to accelerate their transformation process and allowed it to apply it to regular oak wood, dying it deep black.

The design of the furniture is based on the round post chairs typical for the societies living in the swamps of this region. Moorwerk ties together a historical culture and modern crafts mediated by the environmental processes of the bog.
